Out in Corriganville, the part of Simi Valley where the old movie ranch used to be, I got a call from a rideshare driver pulled over on the shoulder.
He had been running a worn flip key for a while, and when he tried to unlock his door that morning, the blade snapped clean inside the lock cylinder. Not bent, not jammed. Snapped, with the tip still buried in the wafer pack.
Another locksmith he had already called told him the cylinder would have to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key, big labor bill. He was trying to figure out if the car was even worth it at that point.

The broken blade fragment came out without touching the cylinder walls. I worked it out carefully, reading the lock as I went, decoding each wafer position to get exact cut depths. The transponder chip inside the fob head was still intact, still paired to the car. I transferred it into a fresh flip key shell, cut a new blade to match the decoded lock, and confirmed the remote was syncing before I closed anything up.
He drove off the shoulder under his own power. The cylinder looked exactly the way it did before I got there.
The dealer quote he had in the back of his mind, just from asking around, was several times what he paid me. For him the real number was the cost of not being stranded anymore.
