Saturday afternoon near Historic Plaza Park in Oxnard, a guy flagged me down in a tennis club parking lot. His 2015 A8, the long-wheelbase 4.0T, was sitting there with every door locked and his only smart key showing nothing on the dash. He had already tried holding the fob against the steering column. Nothing.
I cracked the fob open on my tailgate. The CR2032 looked fine visually, but it metered at 2.6 volts. These Hitag Pro transponders inside the IYZFBSB802 need a healthy battery for the passive polling, and 2.6 is right on the edge where the BCM2 stops seeing the fob at distance but still picks it up at contact range, sometimes.
Fresh CR2032 in, the MMI came alive. "Key 1 detected." Comfort Access responded at the driver handle. I walked to the far end of the lot pressing lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All four buttons solid from about 40 feet out. Three cold starts in a row with the fob sitting in the cup holder, then again from my pocket near the B-pillar. No faults stored in module 09.
He stood there watching the third start cycle like he was waiting for it to quit again. It did not. He thought the whole key was dead. It was a battery reading half a volt low.
That is the kind of thing a dealer visit turns into a half-day ordeal with a loaner car and a diagnostic fee before anyone even looks at the fob.
