A guy over in Strathearn, the gym parking lot off Madera Road, had just bought a used 2003 A8 from a private seller. Solid car, clean interior, one key. The seller told him a spare would be cheap. He called the Audi dealer and got a number that made him sit down.
He found me online. First thing he asked was whether the dealer price was normal. I told him yes, that's what Audi dealers charge. But I also told him I could do the same key, same cut, same programming, for a lot less because I run a van, not a building.
I pulled up to the lot before he went in for his workout. The A8 had its original flip key, and his one working key was in decent shape. I used my equipment to read the transponder data from his existing key and write it onto a new blank, then cut the blade to match the original and programmed the remote side. Took about 40 minutes start to finish. He stood there watching the whole thing, which I actually like. Nothing to hide.
He left with two working keys. The detail that mattered to him: having a second key means that if he loses one down the road, it's a standard add-a-key job. If he'd lost that original before calling me, it would've been a full all-keys-lost procedure, which is a different level of work. He didn't know that going in. Most people don't.
The dealer price was still sitting on his phone when he drove away.
