Most of the Audi owners I hear from weren't careless. They bought the car used, got one key, figured they'd sort out a spare eventually, and then eventually showed up.
A spin instructor out at the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard had exactly that story. Early morning, parking lot, she grabbed her only fob to lock up after class and the pivot hinge on the flip gave out. The blade didn't just separate from the shell. It went into the door lock and stayed there. She was standing there holding the empty housing, no way in, no way to start the car, and a line of people waiting for her next class.
I got out there while the lot was still quiet. First thing was getting the blade fragment out of the door lock without damaging the cylinder. Once that was handled and the door was open, I looked at what she had left. The fob shell was cracked through, but the internal circuit board was intact. That matters because it meant I didn't have to treat this like an all-keys-lost situation. I could read what was already registered and work from there.
I pulled the electronics from the broken housing, transferred them into a new shell with a fresh blade, and used my diagnostic equipment to add a second key alongside the rebuilt original. She left with two working fobs instead of one.
Forty minutes, start to finish. The dealer had quoted her for a full replacement key with programming as a separate line item. She paid a fraction of that, in the parking lot, before her next class started.
If your fob is cracked or broken, don't throw it away. The pieces are worth something.
