When a 2014 Audi A8 key is done wrong, it does not just partially work. It fails. The engine might crank but the immobilizer kills fuel injection after two seconds. The remote might lock but not unlock. The comfort access might detect the fob one day and ignore it the next. Or the key programs initially but the car rejects it after a drive cycle.
A veterinary technician at the dog grooming shop in Oxnard (Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor area) had a key made by another locksmith for her A8 that stopped working after about a week. It would start the car fine in the morning, then by evening the push-to-start refused to detect it. She thought the car had an antenna problem.
The previous locksmith had used a generic transponder chip that was close to the Megamos spec but not exact. On Audi's immobilizer system, a close-but-wrong chip can pass initial registration but fail after the car runs its deeper verification over multiple drive cycles. I used my VVDI2 to read the chip in her bad key, confirmed the data was wrong, and programmed a new key with the correct Megamos generation matched to her FCC ID IYZFBSB802. Her fob also had a low CR2032 battery making the intermittent detection worse.
The replacement has been working since. Her cost was 95. The dealer would have charged 200. The difference between a key that works and one that works for a week is chip accuracy.
