People lose all their BMW keys more often than you'd think. The most common story isn't dramatic. They bought the car used with one fob, always planned to get a spare, and years later that fob finally dies. The shell cracks, the rechargeable battery stops holding charge, or it goes through the wash.

A customer at her apartment in Ventura had her only smart key to her 2019 BMW X5 fall and crack on the tandem parking spot concrete. The shell split and the blade snapped. Fob housing in one hand, blade stuck in the door lock. Zero working keys.

I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from the cracked fob's chip, which was still intact. That saved time because I could skip a full module read. I extracted the blade fragment, decoded the lock, and programmed two new keys. Her fob, FCC ID NBGIDGNG1, was a 4-button G-series smart key that I rebuilt into a new shell with salvaged electronics where possible. I showed her the chip from the broken fob so she could see it was still good.

She went from zero keys to two in about 50 minutes. Total was around 353. A full AKL without the broken pieces would cost more, and the dealer wanted 639 either way. If you still have the broken fob, bring it. The chip data inside is usually recoverable and makes the job faster and cheaper.
