2001 BMW X5 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Guy near McGrath State Beach in Oxnard bought a 2001 X5 4.4i off a private seller. Nice shape, one key. The seller told him to sort out a spare on his own.
He called the BMW dealer. They wanted him to tow it in because they needed the car present, plus order the key blank, plus schedule the programming. Multi-day affair. He asked around on Bimmerfest and someone said to try a mobile locksmith who knows EWS.
That's how he found me. I met him in his driveway. His X5 had the EWS3 module (part number 61.35-6 905 667, common on these). I connected my VVDI2, read the EWS data through the OBD2 port, and loaded the ISN to sync with the DME. No bench pull needed since he still had a working key. Add-a-key on these is a much shorter process than all-keys-lost.
I cut the HU58 blade on my Condor, programmed the PCF7935 transponder to his EWS, and synced the 3-button remote. Tested both keys: start, remote lock, remote unlock, panic. Everything clean.
He stood there holding two working BMW keys and just kind of weighed them in his hands like he was making sure they were real. He'd been quoted a multi-day wait and a tow. This took about 40 minutes, no tow, a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
I told him to keep both keys in rotation. On EWS cars, if your only key fails or gets lost, the job jumps in price and time because the module has to come out for bench work. A spare now is the cheapest insurance there is.
