A guy near Ventura City Hall called me from his brother's driveway. He had a 2015 BMW X5, one working smart key, and a question I actually appreciate: "If I get a spare made, can I carry it every day or is it just a backup?"
Honest answer. The aftermarket blanks I carry use the same HU92R laser-cut blade profile and the same HITAG Pro chip that the FEM module expects. Same 4-button layout as the NBGIDGNG1. Same board design. The functional difference in daily use is zero when the blank is properly sourced.
I pulled his FEM for bench work right there on the hood. Wrote the new key to the module, cut the emergency blade, and ran the full cycle: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, Comfort Access on every door handle, push-button start from both front seats. He stood there watching the Comfort Access test like he was waiting for it to fail. It didn't.
The only visible difference between his OEM fob and the new one is no BMW roundel on the back. That's it. Same weight, same button feel, same snap when the housing closes.
Where aftermarket goes wrong is cheap sourcing. Thin shells, wrong chip revision, mushy button pads. I test every batch before it goes in the van. If the shells crack or the chips don't pair on the bench, the whole lot goes back.
He pocketed the new key and drove off. No drawer backup. A daily carry, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
