I was parked near the marina at Ventura Harbor on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. A guy had snapped his key blade in the ignition of his 2018 BMW X5. Half the blade was stuck inside the cylinder. Half was in his hand. Another locksmith had already looked at it and told him the ignition needed to be drilled and replaced.
On a BMW, that's a significant repair before you've even touched the key situation. He called me for a second opinion.
I drove over, took a look, and told him to give me a few minutes before anyone touched anything. Using the right extraction tools, I worked the broken fragment out of the cylinder without damaging the wafer surfaces inside. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions, cut a fresh blade to match, and went through the full programming procedure to pair the new smart key to his vehicle.
The new blade turned on the first try. His original BMW ignition cylinder was intact, undamaged, exactly as it was before the key broke.
He mentioned what the other locksmith had quoted him for the drill-and-replace path. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he left with a working key and a cylinder that didn't need to be touched.
The drilling approach wasn't wrong out of malice. Some guys just don't carry the extraction tools. I do.
