There's a VFW hall out in East Ventura, and I was wrapping up a call nearby when a guy flagged me down in the parking lot. He had a 2014 BMW X5 that cranked fine but killed itself every single time before it caught. He'd already paid another locksmith. The fob was new, cut correctly, and the guy had left him with a receipt and a car that didn't run.
He told me the other locksmith blamed the immobilizer module and said it needed dealer replacement. That's the move people make when the real problem is over their head.
I connected to the OBD port and pulled the data. The immobilizer module was healthy. What wasn't there was a completed security sync. BMW's system requires the key, the immobilizer module, and the engine control unit to all carry the same internal security number. The previous locksmith had written the key to the immobilizer but never read the engine control unit's number first. The engine computer saw a mismatch and cut fuel on every start. Cranks, no start. Classic.
I read the security number from the engine control unit, rewrote the immobilizer data with a full three-way match, and confirmed the sync on screen so he could see it himself. Three consecutive clean starts. He stood there watching like he was waiting for it to die again.
He mentioned what the dealer quoted him for a full module replacement job. It was a lot. He'd also already paid the first locksmith, which was money he wasn't getting back. What I charged him was a fraction of the dealer number, and this time the car actually ran when I left.
