I was working out of Five Points one afternoon when a call came in from a guy parked off Gonzales Road. He had a 2003 BMW X5 and a fob that had quit doing anything remotely useful. The car still started, the blade still turned, but the remote side was completely dead. No lock response, no unlock, nothing. He had tried a new CR2032 already, which is what most people try first, and it had not helped.
When I got there I popped the key apart and looked at the battery contacts before I did anything else. One contact had a small amount of oxidation that looked like nothing but was keeping the circuit from completing properly. Cleaned it up, seated the fresh CR2032 he had put in, and the remote came back.
That was it. No reprogramming. No module work. Just a contact that had gone slightly green and a battery that needed to be properly seated rather than just dropped in.
He mentioned he had called the dealer before reaching out to me. They wanted him to bring it in on a flatbed because they assumed a dead remote on a BMW of this age meant a programming issue or module failure. He would have been waiting a day or more for a diagnosis appointment alone.
I was back on the road in under twenty minutes. He kept saying he thought it was going to be a whole ordeal. Sometimes it is. This time it was not.
