A guy at the tennis courts near Cross at Grant Park in Ventura had been watching my YouTube channel for months before he ever needed me. He told me he had seen my CAS3 key replacement video, the full procedure on camera, and saved my number just in case. Smart move.
His 2016 X5 started giving him the "Key battery discharged" message, but a fresh CR2032 did not fix it. Range was getting shorter every week. He could only start it by pressing the fob right against the column, and the comfort access on the door handles had quit completely.
When I got there I confirmed the NBGIDGNG1 fob was the problem. Internal board was corroded around the battery contact. Not repairable in a way I would stand behind.
The F15 X5 uses the FEM/BDC body module, not the older CAS. That means the key does not program through the OBD port the same way an E70 would. I pulled the FEM, brought it to my bench setup in the van, read the ISN data, wrote the new key file to a genuine BMW smart key, and cut the HU100R blade on site. Put the module back, tested all four buttons, comfort access on both front handles, and did three clean start cycles.
He stood there watching the whole time, which I like. Same guy from the videos, same process, no surprises. He drove off with two working keys for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him.
