2016 BMW X5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2016 BMW X5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Telephone Road near the College area of Ventura when I got the call. Guy had his 2016 X5 sitting in a lot off Lemonwood and his fob had gone completely dark. No lock, no unlock, nothing from the buttons. He said it just stopped working over a few days, started feeling sluggish, then quit.

He had already swapped the CR2032 himself. Twice. New batteries from two different stores because he thought the first one might be bad. Still nothing. By the time he called me he was manually unlocking with the integrated blade key and getting in the old way.

I pulled up and the first thing I did was check the fob itself. The battery contacts looked fine. No corrosion, no bend. I tested communication and it was gone. The fob had dropped its pairing with the vehicle. That happens. It is not common, but it happens, especially if the battery goes fully dead and stays dead long enough.

The fix was not a new fob. I was able to re-establish communication through the diagnostic port, re-pair the existing fob, and test all four buttons. Lock, unlock, and both of the remaining buttons came back clean. I did three start cycles to confirm the immobilizer was seeing the key correctly each time.

He asked if the dealer could have fixed it the same way. Probably, but he was looking at booking an appointment, dropping the car off, and paying what dealers charge for BMW key work. This was done on site, same afternoon, for a fraction of that.
