Got a call from a guy out near Point Mugu State Park in Oxnard. His 2000 BMW X5 had one working remote head key left, and the rubber on the buttons was splitting apart. He said he had been putting off getting a spare for over a year because the dealer told him the key had to be ordered by VIN through BMW, then he would need to bring the car in for programming. He quoted me the wait time they gave him: five to seven business days just for the part, then a separate appointment.
He found me online and asked if I could do it same day. I told him yes and headed out.
I parked next to his X5 in a gravel pulloff area and got to work. Used my HU92 Lishi to decode the door lock, reading each wafer position for the sidewinder blade cut. His key was the 3-button remote head, FCC ID LX8FZV, with an ID44 transponder chip inside. I cut the blade, then connected to the OBD-II port to program the new key's transponder through the EWS3 system. The whole job ran about 40 minutes.
When I handed him the finished key and he tested the remote lock and unlock, he just kind of nodded and said, "That's it?" He was expecting the whole thing to be a production. It wasn't.
He kept his original key as his daily and pocketed the new one as backup. Paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted and never left the trailhead.
