Near Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura, a woman had her only smart key to a 2019 X5 crack open on the concrete of her tandem parking spot. Shell split, emergency blade snapped off inside the driver's door lock. Fob housing in one hand, nothing in the other.
She had bought the car used with one fob. Always planned to get a spare. That plan ran out of time on a Wednesday afternoon.
I got there and started with the broken pieces. The Hitag Pro chip inside the cracked housing was still intact on the board, so I used my VVDI2 to pull the transponder data directly from it. That is the shortcut people don't know about. If your fob is broken but the chip survived, I can skip a full BDC2 module read, which saves real time.
I extracted the blade fragment from the door cylinder, decoded the lock, and cut two new blades. Her NBGIDGNG1 fob electronics were still functional, so I rebuilt them into a fresh shell. The second key I programmed from scratch and synced both to the BDC2.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 50 minutes. Stood there watching the dash confirm each one and just quietly said "okay" when the second key started it. That was it. No drama, no tow truck, no week waiting on a dealer parts order.
If your fob is cracked or broken, bring every piece. The chip data inside is almost always recoverable and it makes the whole job faster and cheaper.
