A guy near San Buenaventura State Beach in Ventura flagged me down about his 2017 BMW X5. Not literally, he called, but the urgency was there. His key had been reprogrammed by another locksmith three days earlier. Worked fine at first. Then the X5 would crank, fire for half a second, and cut fuel dead.
The other locksmith told him the DME was bad. That is a common misdiagnosis on these F15 X5s when someone skips the ISN synchronization between the CAS4+ and the N55 or N63 engine computer. BMW's immobilizer has a grace period, sometimes a few drive cycles, where it tolerates a mismatch. After that, it kills fuel delivery and throws an internal CAS tamper flag.
I pulled CAS4+ data with my VVDI2, confirmed the ISN had never been properly synced to the DME. The key itself, FCC ID NBGIDGNG1, four-button smart key with CR2032, was physically fine. The programming was just incomplete. Re-ran the ISN exchange, verified the secret matched on both sides, and did a cold start test. Clean ignition, no fuel cutoff, no dash warnings.
He sat in the driver seat for a good ten seconds after startup, just watching the tach hold steady. Like he was waiting for it to quit again.
His DME was never the problem. A BMW key job that skips ISN sync is not a finished job.
