Push-to-start all-keys-lost is the job that worries most Acura owners the most. No physical key slot, no way to just turn the ignition. The car needs to wirelessly detect a fob that's programmed to its specific immobilizer before it will even wake up. If that fob is gone, the car feels completely dead, but it isn't.
A wedding guest at a hotel parking lot in Otay Mesa had a 2013 Acura RDX with push-to-start and zero keys. He was visiting from out of state for a Saturday wedding and his only fob had disappeared somewhere between the hotel room and the ceremony. The hotel concierge told him smart key replacement was dealer-only, and the dealer was closed until Monday.
I drove to the hotel. Push-to-start AKL is more involved than a standard transponder job because the car's body control module needs to be accessed and the old key data cleared before new fobs can learn. I used my ACDP to pull the immobilizer data as a safety backup, then ran the AKL sequence through the OBD port. His smart key, FCC ID KR5434760, was a 4-button proximity fob.
His car started in a hotel parking lot on a Saturday night. Total was around $278. The dealer route would have been $524 plus a multi-day wait that would have stranded him past his flight home. Smart key AKL isn't dealer-only, it's tool-dependent. He was pretty relieved when I told him he'd make his flight.
