My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard mobile job. I use specialized extraction tools to pull the broken piece without damaging the ignition cylinder.

One thing worth knowing about this generation of Acura fobs: the key blade sits in a folding or integrated housing, and the blade itself can develop stress cracks near the base over time, especially if the key ring hole takes a lot of weight. Once it snaps, the broken piece usually isn't buried deep, but it does need the right hook to come out clean.

Once the piece is out, I can cut a replacement blade from your vehicle's lock data and handle the programming on site so you're not making two trips.

Question 2

What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2014 RDX?

Your 2014 RDX uses a smart key system, which means the fob does more than one job at once. There's a transponder chip inside that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer to authorize the engine to start. There's also a short-range proximity signal the car's antennas are constantly listening for, which is what lets the door handle touch sensors work. And then there are the four buttons for the standard remote functions.

All three of those things live in the same fob. If the transponder side fails, the car won't start. If the proximity side goes down, the touch unlock stops working even if the buttons still work. If the battery just gets low, you can lose range or get intermittent warnings before anything fully stops.

The physical key blade is also in there as a backup. If the fob electronics fail completely, you can still use the blade to get into the car manually. Starting it is a separate issue at that point, but you won't be locked out on a parking lot.

Question 3

My Acura is showing a key-not-detected warning. What do I do?

Start with the battery. A low CR2032 is the most common reason that warning shows up on this system, and the symptoms can look worse than they are.

If you're already seeing the warning and need to start the car now, try holding the fob body directly against the start button and pressing the brake. The car has a backup reader built into or near that button that can pick up the transponder signal even when the battery is too weak for the normal proximity range. It's not a trick, it's a designed fallback.

If a fresh CR2032 and the backup method both fail, the issue is likely inside the fob or in the vehicle's antenna and receiver system. Cracked solder joints on the fob's circuit board are a real failure mode on fobs this age, especially if the fob has been dropped or if it rides loose in a pocket and gets flexed repeatedly. That kind of failure tends to be intermittent at first and gets more consistent over time. At that point, call me and I'll diagnose it on site in the Garden Road Area or wherever you're parked in Poway.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 RDX. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2014 RDX smart key system requires professional diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that works for this. That type of onboard self-programming only exists on older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. Smart key systems like the one on your RDX need to be enrolled through the OBD port with the right software.

The fob you bought online can still be used. It just needs to be programmed before it does anything. Bring it to me or have me come to you.

One door handle stopped doing the touch unlock but my other doors still work. Is the fob failing?

Almost certainly not. If the other handles are responding and the start button still recognizes the fob, the key is doing its job. Touch unlock on these uses a capacitive sensor built into each door handle, and those sensors can fail independently. Dirt, moisture, and general wear all affect them. The wiring running to that specific handle is also worth checking before assuming the sensor itself is bad.

Wipe the handle area down and retest. If the problem stays isolated to one door, you're looking at a handle sensor or door-side wiring issue, not anything wrong with the fob or the main security system.
