A delivery driver in Rancho Bernardo, out near the Santaluz area, called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a broken key and a quote he didn't like.
The blade had snapped inside the door lock of his 2016 Acura RDX. He'd been running a worn, slightly bent key for months and it finally gave out mid-route. When I got there, the fragment was sitting shallow enough to work with. I used a Lishi tool to extract it without touching the wafer surfaces inside the lock. Once it was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed to make a working key without any original to copy from.
His fob was a five-button smart key, and the chip inside the cracked housing was still intact. I transferred the electronics into a fresh shell, programmed and paired it on site with my diagnostic equipment, and cut a new blade to the decoded specs.
His original lock cylinder works exactly the way it did before. Nothing drilled, nothing replaced, nothing touched that didn't need to be touched.
The other locksmith's plan would have run him significantly more. He saved a good chunk and made the rest of his deliveries that day.
