One thing specific to the RDX that's worth knowing before you wait for anyone: your fob has an emergency mechanical key stored inside it. If you have the fob but it's not communicating, pull that blade out and look for the physical keyhole on the driver's door. It's tucked behind a small cover on the handle. That might get you in before you even need a locksmith.

If you don't have any key at all, that's when you call me. I'll get the door open and we can go from there on the key side.

Does the dealer really have to handle this, or can a mobile locksmith actually program a 2020 RDX smart key?

A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can handle it completely. The 2020 RDX smart key system requires programming through the OBD port, same as what the dealer does. The tool matters, not the location.

Dealers will often tell you to tow the car in, which adds cost and time before they've touched anything. On an all-wheel-drive RDX with no working key, getting it onto a truck when the car is locked in park takes either a flatbed with wheel dollies or someone who can get inside first to shift it. That's a real logistical headache that a mobile visit avoids entirely.

What do I need to show to prove the RDX is mine before you cut and program a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership. Registration, title, or an insurance card with the VIN on it all work. I'll also verify the VIN from the dashboard plate or the door jamb sticker before anything gets cut or programmed.

Same standard a dealer would apply, but done in the parking lot instead of at a service counter.

My 2020 RDX shows a key warning on the dash even though I'm holding the fob. What's going on?

This comes up a lot on RDX forums. A few different things can cause it.

First check is the fob battery. The 2020 RDX fob uses a CR2032, and when it gets weak the car can still detect the key intermittently, which produces exactly the kind of warning you're describing: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Swap the battery before assuming anything deeper is wrong.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, the next thing to check is where you're holding the fob inside the cabin. The antennas that read the fob are embedded in specific areas. Some RDX owners have found that keeping the fob near certain electronics, like a phone with a wallet case or certain wireless chargers, can interfere with the signal just enough to cause a false warning.

If both of those check out and the warning keeps coming back, that's when it's worth having the system read with a diagnostic tool. Could be a communication issue between the fob and the vehicle security system that needs proper diagnosis rather than a guess.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2020 RDX. Can I program it myself?

No. The 2020 RDX smart key has no self-programming sequence. There's no button combination, no ignition cycling trick, no onboard add-a-key routine. The fob has to be paired to the vehicle using diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port.

The fob you bought online isn't a problem on its own, as long as it matches the factory FCC ID on your original fob. But it will not work until it's professionally programmed. Bring the fob and the car, I'll handle the rest.
