East Valley on a Saturday morning. The owner of a 1997 Audi A4 had been driving around with one key for a couple of years after the second one went missing. Then the one remaining key stopped triggering the remote functions. Blade still worked in the door and the ignition, but the lock and unlock buttons were dead. He had been manually keying the door every time.

I pulled up, popped the fob open on my workbench in the van. CR2032 was still showing a little voltage on the meter but not enough to actually drive the transmitter reliably. Decoded the lock, cut the blade to match, then connected to the OBD port, accessed the immobilizer, and programmed the new key into the system. Walked both keys through the full routine: remote range, lock, unlock, trunk release, ignition start, three times each.
He had not had a working spare in years. Left with two tested keys and the confidence that if one goes missing again, the car is not a paperweight.
The dealer quote he had gotten -- just to have them look at the remote situation -- was more than what he paid me for a complete second key and programming. He mentioned it almost as an afterthought. I was already packing up the van.
