I got a call out to Spring Valley, over in the Bancroft area, from someone whose 2006 A4 was doing something strange. The car would start fine in the morning, run all day, and then somewhere mid-week it started hesitating on startup. By the time she called me, it was cranking but dying after about two seconds, every time.
She had already had a replacement key made. Not by me.
The symptom she described is a pretty specific one on these older Audis. The engine fires, the immobilizer runs its verification in the background, and if something does not match, fuel injection gets cut. The car acts like it almost started. She had been told the antenna was probably bad.
I read the transponder chip in her existing key on site. The chip had been programmed, but the data written to it did not match what the immobilizer on this car expected to see after a few drive cycles. Initial registration can pass with a close match. The deeper check that runs over subsequent cycles is less forgiving.
I programmed a new key using the correct chip type and confirmed the data before she even tried the ignition. Started on the first turn. No two-second stall.
While I had everything out, I also found the CR2032 in her fob was nearly flat, which had been adding its own layer of weirdness to the remote functions. Swapped it, tested all four buttons, confirmed range.
She asked why the first locksmith's key lasted a week before failing. Honest answer: the initial programming cleared the first check. The car just needed more time to disagree.
