I was out in Shadowridge on a Saturday, parked near the tennis club off Shadowridge Drive. The owner had a 2007 A4 and a fob that had been acting up for a while. Lock and unlock buttons were intermittent, and that morning it just stopped starting entirely. He figured it was the battery in the fob. He was half right.
The fob battery was low, but the transponder side had also lost its registration. On this generation, those are two separate problems with two separate fixes. Swapping the fob battery alone would have gotten his remotes back and left him still stranded.
I decoded the lock and cut a replacement blade on site. Then I connected to the OBD port, pulled the security PIN from the cluster, and ran the key registration sequence through the immobilizer. The whole thing took about 40 minutes from the time I parked my van.
After that I did the part he wasn't expecting. I walked to the far end of the parking lot and ran the remote functions from distance. Came back, started the car three times in a row, confirmed no intermittent faults. He stood there watching and said he thought I'd just hand him the key and go.
He'd already called the dealer earlier that week. They wanted him to bring it in, said they'd need to order the key, and the earliest programming appointment was four days out. He was standing in a parking lot in Shadowridge with a car that wouldn't start. Four days wasn't an option.
