1998 Audi A4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How fast can you get to my location?

For calls in the Live Oak Park Area of Fallbrook, I typically arrive within 30 minutes depending on where you are and current traffic. When you call, I confirm the year and model so I have the right blank stock loaded before I leave. Owners who go the dealer route on a late-nineties A4 often find the dealer does not keep older key blanks in stock at all and has to source them, which can stretch into days.

Q: Can I get a key made today?

Yes. I carry blank stock and cutting equipment on every call. There is no waiting on a part to ship, no appointment booked out three days, and no tow required. One owner I spoke with had been told by a dealer that the blank for her late-nineties Audi was no longer in their local inventory and would need to be sourced -- which pushed the job out almost a week.

Q: My key turns in the ignition but the engine starts and immediately dies. Is that a key problem?

Not the cut itself, no. If the blade is turning and the engine fires but stalls right away, that points to the anti-theft side of the system rather than the mechanical key. Some vehicles from this era carry an anti-theft element that has to recognize the key before it allows the engine to keep running. A freshly cut blade alone will not satisfy that -- the anti-theft component needs to be diagnosed and addressed on site.

Q: The key blade is worn down and sometimes slips in the ignition. Do I need a whole new lock cylinder?

Usually not. A worn key is more often the issue than a worn cylinder, especially on a vehicle this age where one key has been used daily for years. A freshly cut replacement blade made to the correct depth and spacing will often restore clean operation in both the ignition and the doors.

1998 Audi A4 Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone in the Live Oak Park Area side of Fallbrook. She had snapped her key off in the door lock -- about a third of the blade still sitting in the cylinder. The car was parked in her driveway and she had a full day ahead of her.

Her first call had been to a big locksmith chain that told her they would need to order a blank and could probably get to her by end of the following day. Her second call was to the dealer. They wanted the car towed in, said they would need to see the registration and ID, and could not give her a same-day turnaround.

I showed up with extraction tools and blank stock. Got the broken piece out of the cylinder without pulling the lock. Decoded the existing cut from the lock itself, cut a replacement blade on site, and walked her through the doors and ignition to confirm everything turned cleanly.

She was back inside her house in under an hour. The dealer route would have cost her a tow, a wait, and a fraction of her week.

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 1998 Audi A4 key replacement take?▼

For a straightforward replacement -- one working key to copy or a lock to decode -- the cutting itself takes only a few minutes once I have the right blank in hand. The full visit from arrival to a tested, working key is usually well under an hour. If the original key is lost and there is nothing to copy, I decode the lock cylinder directly on site, which adds a little time but not much.
