It feels like a mechanical problem but it's a security system problem.

This also shows up when someone uses a key that was programmed to a different vehicle, or when a transponder chip inside the fob is damaged. The blade and the chip are two separate things - the blade can be perfect and the chip can still be bad.

If you're seeing this with a key that used to work fine, it can also point to a fault developing in the immobilizer reader ring around the ignition cylinder. That ring is what actually communicates with the chip in the key. I can diagnose which side of that equation is failing when I'm on site.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

You can buy the fob. Programming it yourself on this generation is not really an option the way it is on some domestic vehicles with a known ignition-turn sequence.

The transponder registration on the 2003 A4 requires equipment that reads and writes to the immobilizer. There's no documented owner-accessible relearn procedure for the chip side. The remote functions have a somewhat simpler registration path on some of these, but without the transponder paired, the remote is irrelevant - the car still won't start.

So: buy the fob if you want to save on parts cost, but budget for a locksmith to do the programming. Bring the fob with you when you call, or have it ready when I arrive.
