A catering company owner called me just after 6 in the morning from a commercial kitchen in Spring Valley Village. She had a wedding reception to deliver for in under four hours. Her A4 would not start, the fob was unresponsive, and the emergency blade inside the fob was not turning the door lock cylinder because the cylinder was stiff with old dried lubricant. Her delivery van was packed and parked. She was not going anywhere.
I keep my van stocked and I was already up. I made it to her in about 20 minutes.
First thing was the door. The cylinder was not broken, just neglected. A little work with the right pick and it came open. Once inside, I connected to the OBD port and pulled the fault from the immobilizer. The fob battery had dropped low enough that the vehicle security system stopped recognizing it reliably, and the system needed a reset to re-pair the fob once I swapped in a fresh CR2032.
The battery swap alone was not going to do it at that point. The reset took a few minutes through the diagnostic interface. After that I walked every button, checked the door handles, confirmed the start sequence. Everything came back clean.
She was loaded and heading to the venue by 6:50 am.
She mentioned later that a friend had told her to just tow it to the dealer. That would have been half a day, minimum, and the catering job would have been gone. I do not tell people the dealer cannot do it. They can. It just takes longer and costs more, and sometimes you have four hours and a trunk full of food.
