Out in Harbison Canyon, I got a call from a woman who manages the front office at a medical clinic. Her 2014 A4 had been acting strange for a couple of weeks.
The door handles would sometimes not respond when she walked up, and twice the car had thrown a key-not-detected warning on the dash before eventually starting. She assumed it was a programming issue and was already bracing for a dealer trip.
She texted me the VIN before I left my previous job, which is exactly what I ask for. By the time I pulled into the lot, I already knew the key configuration, had the correct blank prepped, and had her vehicle pulled up in my system.
When I got there, I opened the fob first thing, right in front of her. The CR2032 was the original battery. Four-year-old cell in a car that age is not a surprise. I swapped it, seated it correctly, and tested. Three of the four buttons came back immediately. The fourth, the one she used most, was sluggish because the contact pad directly under it had a slight depression from years of use. I cleaned the contact surface and retested. All four buttons, full range, door handle touch response working from a normal approach distance.
No programming needed that day. Just the right diagnosis, done on site, for a fraction of what the dealer visit would have cost her before they even looked at it.
She told me she had already Googled dealer prices for a replacement smart key and was prepared for the worst. I told her to hold onto the fob number I gave her in case she ever does need a spare programmed. With the A4, having a second key registered is worth doing before you ever need it.
