Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Audi vehicles?

We use keys built to OEM specification, matched to the factory fob ID and programming requirements for your specific vehicle. On the 2011 A4, that matters more than it does on simpler systems. The body control module on these cars is particular about what it will accept during key enrollment, and a fob that does not meet the factory spec can fail partway through programming or behave inconsistently after the fact.

Aftermarket fobs vary. Some work fine. Others have shell and button quality that degrades quickly, or they carry a transponder that does not play well with the module during the pairing process. For a car with this level of security architecture, we do not take that risk. You get a fob that matches what the car expects, and the programming holds.

How long will a replacement key last?

The programming itself does not wear out. Once the fob is enrolled in the immobilizer, that pairing stays intact as long as the module is healthy and nothing forces a reset. What does wear out is the physical fob: the shell, the buttons, and eventually the battery contacts.

On the 2011 A4, the fob sees daily use, gets dropped, rides in pockets, and takes the usual abuse. The housing and button membranes will show wear before the electronics do. If the buttons start feeling mushy or the shell cracks, a re-shell using the original circuit board is often all it takes. The immobilizer data lives on the board, not the housing.

What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

That said, on the 2011 A4 a key that stops working after programming is more often a vehicle-side issue than a fob problem. A battery disconnect, a low main battery, or a CAN bus hiccup can cause the car to lose recognition of enrolled keys, even ones that were working fine the day before. Audi owners run into this more than they expect, and it reads exactly like a bad key when it is actually a power or communication issue on the car's end.

We diagnose the actual cause. If the key is the problem, we fix it. If the car is the problem, we tell you that too.

My 2011 A4 shows a key warning on the dash and the start button does not respond. Is the fob dead or is something else going on?

Not necessarily the fob. That key-not-detected warning on the dash can come from a few different places.

First check the obvious: battery in the fob. A CR2032 that reads low voltage on a meter can still cause detection failures in practice, especially at close range. Swap it and retest.

If a fresh battery does not help, the next thing to check is whether the car's own 12-volt battery is healthy. A weak main battery is one of the more common reasons the 2011 A4's security system starts behaving erratically. The module needs stable voltage to run key authentication correctly, and when it does not get it, the symptoms look like a fob problem.

If both batteries are good and the warning persists, that points to the fob needing re-enrollment or a module-level issue. That is where we come in.

I have one working key and I want a spare made before something goes wrong. How does that work on the 2011 A4?
