1999 Audi A4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my Audi A4 so it no longer works?

Yes. When keys are programmed on this generation A4, the process wipes the existing key memory and registers only the keys physically present during that session. A lost or stolen key that is not presented gets erased. It will not start the car or operate the remote functions after that. If you believe a key was taken, this is the clean way to cut it off from the vehicle entirely.

Q: My 1999 Audi A4 uses a flip key, so how does the emergency access work if the fob dies?

The blade is right there on the fob. On this flip key style, the blade folds out from the body of the fob, and it is the same blade you use to start the car. There is no separate hidden insert key like you find on push-button start fobs. If the fob battery dies and the remote stops working, the blade still turns the ignition and the door lock cylinder.

Q: My Audi A4 remote stopped working after I replaced the battery. What went wrong?

This is the most common call I get on these. A fresh CR2032 does not automatically restore the sync between the fob and the car's receiver. On this generation A4, the remote can lose its pairing if the battery goes fully dead, and just dropping in a new cell does not re-establish it. There is a re-sync procedure for these that does not require programming equipment.

Q: The key turns in my 1999 Audi A4 but the engine starts and immediately stalls. Is this a key problem?

That pattern, starts and stalls within a second or two, points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder in the key blade. The ignition cylinder accepts the blade mechanically, but the security system has not cleared the engine to run. It can happen with a worn or damaged transponder chip inside the key, a key that lost its registration, or occasionally a fault in the receiver that reads the chip.

1999 Audi A4 Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked on Carnation Avenue in the Bayside area of Imperial Beach, eating a late dinner in the van, when the call came in. She introduced herself as a hospitalist who had just finished an overnight shift. She needed a spare flip key for her 1999 Audi A4 and told me she had already looked up my BSIS license number before dialing.

She said it plainly: she works odd hours, she parks in low-traffic areas, and she does not let unverified strangers near her car. I respected that. I told her my license number is public on the BSIS site and she was welcome to pull it up while I drove over.

When I got there she had already verified it. We talked for about two minutes while I looked at her existing key. The blade was worn pretty well, the fob body had a crack along the hinge, and she said the remote had been intermittent for months. She had been living with it.

I cut a new blade to match her lock, transferred the transponder to a new fob shell, programmed the remote to the car's receiver, and confirmed the transponder was reading clean on ignition. Then I walked every button and both door locks while she watched.

The dealer had quoted her a price she described as "not reasonable for a 25-year-old car." What I charged was a fraction of that. She had a working spare and a fob that locked her car consistently for the first time in a while, before her next shift started.

Audi A4 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 1999 Audi A4?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works on late-90s European vehicles before you call the dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on this generation A4 means the immobilizer has no registered key in memory, so the car will not start. A dealer visit adds towing cost on top of the key work, and Audi dealer quotes on older all-keys-lost jobs tend to be high even when the car is not a current model.
