I was already past 10pm when the call came in from Santaluz, the gated community off Camino del Sur in Rancho Bernardo. A woman who worked overnight shifts at a pharmacy had walked to her garage, remote flip key in hand, and the A8 just sat there. No response to the buttons. I popped the CR2032 out first. It tested low. Replaced it, reseated the contact, and tested all four buttons. Lock and unlock came back immediately. But the car still threw the key-not-detected warning and would not start.

That told me the transponder side had lost sync with the immobilizer, likely because the fob had been marginal long enough that the rolling code and immobilizer data had drifted. That's a known behavior on this generation. I connected my programmer to the OBD port, read the security data, and re-enrolled the key to the immobilizer. The whole thing took about forty minutes including diagnostics.

She started the car, let it idle for a second, then just looked at the dash like she was waiting for it to change its mind. It didn't. She made her shift.

Getting a spare cut and programmed while you still have a working key is always cheaper and faster than this route. But when it goes sideways at 10pm in a garage in Santaluz, this is exactly the job I'm set up for.
