Out in Carmel Mountain Ranch, I got a call from a guy who works out of a coworking space off Carmel Mountain Road. He had a 2015 Audi A8 and wanted a second key made. Not because he lost anything. Just wanted a spare his wife could use daily without borrowing the one fob they had.
His first question, before he even told me where the car was parked, was whether I could do an OEM key or only aftermarket. He had been burned once on another car, years back, with a cheap key that stopped working in six months.
I told him what I tell everyone: the OEM fob carries the four-ring logo and the factory housing, and it costs more because of that branding. An aftermarket blank built to spec, from a supplier I have tested across a lot of Audi and VW jobs, works the same way in daily use. Same button count, same circuit board layout, same battery, same key blade profile. The immobilizer does not know or care about the logo on the back. What it cares about is whether the transponder chip is correctly enrolled, and that happens through the OBD port with the right equipment regardless of which housing the chip sits in.
He went aftermarket. I decoded the cut from his existing key, cut the blade on my machine, programmed the new fob through the diagnostic port, and walked every function: lock, unlock, trunk release, and comfort access on both front doors. Everything behaved. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted him for the same job.
The whole thing was done in the parking lot before his next meeting started.
