Out at The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe, I got a call about a 1997 Dodge Caravan with no working key. The owner had one copy left, and it had snapped off in the door lock. The ignition key was somewhere in a move from three years back and never turned up.
The van itself was in decent shape for its age. Parked in a side lot, doors locked, no way in without either picking the lock or decoding it.
I picked the door lock to get in, then moved to the ignition cylinder and decoded the cut from there. No key code on file anywhere for a van this old, so decoding the cylinder directly is the only reliable path. Cut the replacement on site, tested it in both the ignition and the door lock, and made a second copy while I was set up.
The owner had been putting off the whole thing because he figured it meant a dealer trip, a parts order, and a week of waiting. It was about 45 minutes start to finish, done in his lot, and he had two working keys before I packed up.
For a van this age, the dealer route often means sourcing a locksmith anyway. They don't stock blanks for a 27-year-old Caravan off the shelf.
