A Bonita resident called me on a Tuesday morning from a parking lot off Bonita Road. His 2005 Dodge Caravan was sitting there locked, completely unresponsive to the fob. He'd already swapped what he thought was a fresh CR2032 from a TV remote, and nothing changed.
When I got there, the key blade on his remote head key still turned the door lock cylinder fine. Got in, got the van running. So the ignition side was good. The issue was purely the remote signal. He was convinced the fob had failed.
I pulled the fob apart on my tailgate. The battery he'd swapped in was a CR2032, right size, but it was a no-name cell that read low voltage right out of the package. Happens more than people think. Swapped in a quality cell, cleaned both contact tabs with a pencil eraser, and snapped it back together.
Range came back immediately. He tested it across the parking lot and it locked and unlocked clean. No programming needed because the fob was already learned to the van. The whole thing took maybe fifteen minutes once I was on site.
He mentioned he'd called the dealer first. They told him to bring it in for a diagnostic and potentially a new fob, with parts on order. He would have been without a working remote for the better part of a week. The fix ended up being a two-dollar battery and a contact cleaning. I charged him for the service call, he saved a good chunk compared to the dealer route, and he was back home before lunch.
