2000 Dodge Caravan
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Dodge Caravan use, and how does the remote work with it?

The 2000 Caravan runs a two-piece setup. The key blade is a separate metal key that goes in the ignition cylinder. The remote is a standalone fob with three buttons for your door locks and the third function. They are independent pieces. Losing the remote does not stop the van from starting, and a dead fob battery does not affect the ignition.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for what feels like a few minutes of work on a Dodge fob?

Because they bill labor in blocks, not by the minute. The programming connects, runs, and finishes fast. But dealers write a repair order, assign it to a tech, and bill a minimum labor charge regardless of actual time spent. Parts markup on the fob itself adds more. Then there is the diagnostic fee some writers add on top just for plugging in. The actual value you are getting is the programming and the correctly sourced fob.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2000 Caravan. Can I program it myself at home?

Some owners report success using an OBD-based DIY programmer designed for this generation of Chrysler and Dodge vehicles. There is a known process for these older remotes that does not require a dealer. That said, the results vary depending on the tool and the condition of the vehicle's receiver module.

Q: The lock and unlock buttons on my Caravan remote stopped working but the van starts fine. What is going on?

Start with the CR2016 battery. These fobs are picky about voltage and a battery that tests "okay" on a basic meter can still be too weak to transmit reliably. The CR2016 is thinner than the more common CR2032 and is sometimes swapped in incorrectly or left in past its useful life. If a fresh CR2016 does not bring it back, the fob itself may have failed internally, which is common on a vehicle this age.

2000 Dodge Caravan Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a general contractor working a job near Kit Carson Park in Escondido. He had a concrete pour scheduled that Monday morning and his 2000 Dodge Caravan remote had stopped locking the doors entirely. The blade still worked fine in the ignition, but the fob was dead, and he needed the van locked between site visits because he was hauling tools.

He could not leave the site. Not during a pour. He asked if I could come to him, and that is exactly what I do.

I pulled up during a break in the schedule. Swapped the CR2016 first, which is always the right first move on these. No change. The fob itself had given up. I had a replacement unit with the correct factory FCC ID on hand, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port, and walked all three buttons before I packed up.

The whole thing happened in the parking area next to the site. His van never moved. He lost maybe fifteen minutes of his morning, not half a day sitting in a dealer waiting room. He mentioned the dealer had given him an appointment two weeks out. The pour finished on schedule and the van was locked before lunch.

Dodge Caravan Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Dodge dealer actually take for a key fob replacement on a 2000 Caravan?▼

The programming itself is fast, maybe a few minutes once a tech is connected and the correct fob is in hand. The problem is everything wrapped around that. Dodge and Chrysler dealers in most areas are running two to three weeks out on service appointments. If the fob is not sitting on the shelf, add more time for parts ordering.
