Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2001 Dodge Caravan?

For this generation of Caravan, the key is a transponder key, so the two parts that matter are the blade cut and the chip inside the key head. We use key blanks with OEM-grade transponder chips that we've tested and trust on real vehicles. Aftermarket blanks vary a lot in chip quality, and a bad chip means the immobilizer won't recognize the key even if the cut is dead-on. The car will crank, won't start, and you're back to square one. We don't take that risk with our own reputation on the line.

How long will a replacement transponder key last on a 2001 Caravan?

A properly cut and programmed key should last as long as the original. The transponder chip inside is passive, meaning it has no battery to die and no moving parts to wear out. The mechanical blade is the part that eventually shows wear, usually after years of heavy use on a keychain with a lot of weight pulling on it. If the blade wears to the point where it stops turning the cylinder cleanly, a new cut solves it. The programming stays in the immobilizer and doesn't degrade on its own.

On this generation of Caravan, the most common reason a freshly programmed key stops working isn't the key itself. A weak vehicle battery that dips low enough during a crank event can cause the immobilizer system to misread the transponder signal. The key checks out fine when tested in isolation, but the car won't start. Charging or replacing the battery usually brings the system back in line. We've seen that pattern enough times that it's one of the first things we check on a callback. We diagnose the root cause, not just the symptom.

My 2001 Caravan starts fine with the original key but won't start with the new key I had cut at a hardware store. What's going on?

The blade is only half the job. Hardware stores and big-box kiosks cut the blade profile but they don't program the transponder chip. Without programming, the immobilizer in the Caravan sees an unrecognized chip and kills the fuel or ignition signal. The engine cranks but won't fire. This is one of the most common calls I get on this generation of Chrysler minivan. The key looks right, turns the ignition, and does nothing. Bring it to us and we can program the chip to your vehicle without cutting a new blade, as long as the cut is accurate.

I have two working keys for my 2001 Caravan. Can I add a spare myself, or do I need a locksmith?

This generation has an onboard add-a-key procedure that works when you have two valid programmed keys already in hand. The sequence uses the ignition cylinder and both existing keys in a specific order to put the system into programming mode, then you introduce the new key. It's timing-sensitive and has to be done with a properly chipped blank or the sequence won't accept it. Some owners have pulled it off at home, others have burned through attempts and called me anyway. If you want to try it yourself, make sure the blank you're starting with has the correct transponder chip for this system. If you only have one working key, the onboard method won't work and you need a programmer.
