My key fob shell cracked and a button fell off. Do I need a full replacement and reprogramming?

Not always. The part that actually talks to your car is the circuit board inside the fob, not the plastic shell. If the board is intact and undamaged, we can transfer it into a new replacement shell and you keep the same programmed key. No reprogramming, no new pairing, no extra cost for that step.

Where it gets more complicated is if the board itself cracked during the fall, or if the battery contacts bent out of shape and the fob stopped working before you even noticed the shell was bad. In that case we test the board first. If it's gone, then yes, full replacement and programming is the job. But a lot of Challenger owners on forums report cracked shells and worn button pads long before the electronics give out, so a shell swap is a real and common fix on these.

What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2012 Challenger uses what Dodge calls a FOBIK, which stands for Fob Integrated Key. It's a self-contained unit: a physical key blade folds out of the fob body, and the same fob handles your remote functions with the five buttons on the face. Inside the fob is a transponder chip that the immobilizer reads every time you go to start the car. If the chip signal isn't there or isn't recognized, the engine won't run.

That's the main difference from a basic key. A plain metal key just has to be the right cut. This one has to be the right cut and carry a recognized chip signal. Both things have to be true at the same time.

My 2012 Challenger is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I start?

First thing: swap the battery in the fob. A weak CR2032 will cause exactly this symptom, and it can fail gradually in a way that feels like a bigger problem. It might work fine in the morning and then give you trouble after the car's been sitting in the sun for a few hours, because heat stresses a borderline battery faster.

When you put the new battery in, make sure it's seated flat and the contacts are actually touching it. Owners on Challenger forums have reported cases where the battery was physically in the fob but cocked slightly to one side, making intermittent contact.

If the new battery doesn't fix it, try holding the fob body directly against the start area and pressing the brake. Some owners report that this works when the fob signal is weakened but not gone entirely.

Still nothing after that, call me. At that point it's either a pairing issue, a module issue, or something with the fob's internal board, and none of those get solved with a key press sequence.

I have one working key for my 2012 Challenger. Should I get a spare made now or wait until I need one?

Get the spare now. All-keys-lost on a smart fob vehicle is a longer, more involved job than adding a second key while you still have a working one. With one working key present, the process is faster. Lose the last key and the job requires a full security reset before anything new can be enrolled, which adds time and complexity.

One key is also no backup if the fob gets damaged, lost, or the battery dies at a bad moment. The Naval Base Area is not the place to be stranded waiting on a tow.

Can someone who finds or steals my lost fob use it to start the Challenger later?

This is the right question to ask, and the answer matters. Yes, a lost fob can still start your car until it gets erased from the system. The immobilizer doesn't know the fob is lost, only that the chip is recognized. Reporting it stolen doesn't change that.

What does change it is having the lost fob's programming wiped from the vehicle's memory. That requires diagnostic equipment and a tech who knows the procedure. Once it's done, the missing fob is dead to the car, and any new keys get enrolled fresh.

If you lost a fob, call before assuming you're fine. The right move is to erase the old one and add a new one at the same time.
