Out in De Luz, the roads are long and the properties sit far back from everything. When someone there loses a key, the dealer in Temecula or Escondido might as well be on another planet.
A guy called me from his property off one of the rural routes out there. He had a 2023 Dodge Challenger, last key, and it had stopped being recognized at the start button that morning. He had gotten in and out using the fob all day, no problem, but when he went to leave in the evening the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and the engine would not crank. He tried the backup position, holding the fob directly to the start button. Same result. He figured the fob was dead and swapped the CR2032. Still nothing.
He had already called the Dodge dealer. They told him it would be two or three days before they could get him in, and he would need to tow the car to them. That was the part that really got him. The car was sitting in his driveway, not going anywhere, and they wanted him to pay for a flatbed before they even looked at it.
I drove out to De Luz with my diagnostic equipment. When I pulled codes, the immobilizer had logged the fob as unrecognized, not just a weak signal situation. The fob itself had developed a fault, separate from the battery. The transponder side had stopped communicating correctly even though the remote buttons still fired.
I built a replacement fob on site, cut the emergency insert blade to the vehicle, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port to register the new key and erase the old fob from the system. Tested every function before I packed up. He was driving within the hour.
The dealer comparison barely came up. He was just relieved he did not have to arrange a tow for a car sitting in his own driveway.
