I got a call from a guy out in Harbison Canyon, on the east side of El Cajon. He had driven out to visit a buddy for the weekend and wanted to get a spare made before heading back. His 2010 Ford F-150 was his daily driver and his work truck, and he had been running on a single key for about a year. Not ideal, but plenty of people do it.
He asked me directly whether the key I would make him would be as reliable as a dealer key. No hesitation on his part, which I respected. He had done his homework and he wanted a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
Here is what I told him. The OEM Ford key comes from the factory supplier, stamped with the Ford logo, sold through the dealer with the brand markup built in. The aftermarket blank I carry uses the same blade profile, the same transponder chip generation that Ford's immobilizer expects, and the same 3-button circuit board layout as the factory fob. The housing snaps together the same way, has the same button feel, and sits in your pocket the same. What it does not have is the Ford logo on the back and the extra cost that comes with it.
Where aftermarket goes sideways is when someone buys the cheapest batch available. Thin plastic that cracks in a month. Generic chips that are close but not quite right. I have sent back whole batches that did not pass my bench test before they ever went into the field.
His did. The blade cut matched his lock, the chip programmed clean on the first cycle, and the remote paired without a retry. He tested lock, unlock, and the third button himself in the driveway before I packed up.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted. But honestly, he asked the right question and deserved the real answer, so that is what I gave him.
