2013 Ford F-150 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Bonsall, a guy flagged me down after I finished another job nearby. His 2013 F-150 had been giving him grief for a few weeks. The fob buttons worked maybe half the time, the truck would start fine, but the remote lock and unlock were getting flaky and the range had dropped to almost nothing. He figured it was just a dying battery and had already swapped the CR2032 twice.
I pulled the fob apart on the hood of my van. The battery terminals were fine. The contact points inside the housing looked okay. But when I tested the signal output, it was weak enough that the receiver was catching it only in ideal conditions. The housing itself had a hairline crack along one side that was flexing the internal board slightly every time he squeezed the fob to press a button. Small movement, inconsistent contact, intermittent signal. That was it.
Cut a new key blade to match his lock, transferred everything over to a fresh housing, programmed the transponder and the remote functions through the OBD port. Then the part that matters: I walked 30 feet away and tested every button. Lock, unlock, the panic button. I started the truck three times cold. Not because I expected a problem at that point, but because intermittent issues love to hide right up until you hand the key back.
He mentioned his dealer had quoted him something steep just for the diagnostic appointment, before any parts or labor. He had expected me to be in the same range. The gap between what he paid and what the dealer quoted was, in his words, significant.
