2005 Honda Element Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy who worked stocking shelves near the Coronado Shores waterfront called me about his 2005 Element. Another locksmith had made him a key a couple of weeks earlier, and at first it seemed fine. Then the pattern started: car would start in the morning without issue, but by evening it was throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and leaving him standing in the lot.
He had already spent a week convinced something was wrong with the car itself. Changed nothing. Still did it.
When I got there, I pulled the key apart and read the chip with my diagnostic equipment. The chip inside was not the right one for this generation of Honda immobilizer. It was close enough to clear the quick handshake on a cold start but failing the deeper security check the system runs after a few cycles of normal operation. That is a known failure mode with wrong-chip keys, and it is subtle enough that some shops do not even realize they caused it.
I programmed a new key with the correct chip, registered it to his vehicle, and verified it across multiple start attempts before I packed up. No intermittent anything. Just a key that works.
He mentioned what the dealer had quoted him. I was a fraction of that. But honestly the bigger thing was that he did not lose another week wondering if his car had a mystery electrical problem.
