My key snapped inside the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes, and this is more common on Honda remote-head keys than most people expect. The blade connects to the plastic key head at a joint that takes a lot of torque over years of use, and that junction is where they tend to give. When the blade breaks off inside the cylinder, the fix is extraction first, then a replacement.

In most cases, the transponder chip inside the old key head is still good. We can move that over or reprogram a new key to the vehicle on site. You are not automatically looking at a full all-keys-lost situation just because the blade snapped. Bring the key head with you if you have it. Sometimes it changes the approach.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does it matter for my 2011 Element?

The key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, the immobilizer reads that chip. If the signal matches what the car expects, it allows the engine to start. If the chip is missing, unprogrammed, or programmed to a different vehicle, the engine will crank and then cut out, or it will not start at all.

For the 2011 Element, the transponder portion and the remote buttons are combined into one remote-head key. Both functions need to work correctly. A key cut to the right profile but not programmed will physically turn the ignition and do nothing else. Programming is what makes it a working key, not just a key-shaped object.

My Honda is showing a key warning on the dash. Where do I start?

First thing: check whether the car still starts. If it starts and runs normally, the warning may be tied to the remote side of the key rather than the transponder. On remote-head keys like the one the 2011 Element uses, a low or dead battery in the key fob portion can trigger a warning even when the ignition still works.

If the car cranks but immediately stalls, that points to the transponder side and the immobilizer not seeing the chip. That is a different problem and needs a programmer to sort out.

If the key warning comes and goes intermittently, forum owners on Honda-specific boards have tracked that kind of behavior to worn key head contacts and marginal transponder signal, especially on keys with high mileage behind them. The fix there is usually a replacement key rather than chasing an electrical gremlin.

The 2011 Element was discontinued. Does that make finding a replacement key harder?

Not really. The key blanks for this generation are still in supply through aftermarket channels, and the transponder type is well-documented and supported by current programming equipment. Discontinued model does not mean discontinued parts. I keep blanks for these on hand specifically because the Element has a loyal owner base and the cars are still very much on the road. If anything, the age of the platform makes the programming side more settled, not less.

I bought a replacement key online for my 2011 Element. Can I program it myself?

The short answer is no, not on a transponder key like this one.

Honda does have an onboard add-a-key relearn procedure that works on certain older bladed transponder setups, but the remote-head key the 2011 Element uses does not support a DIY ignition-turn sequence for the transponder. You need a programmer to write the chip to the vehicle. The remote portion can sometimes be self-programmed through a button sequence if you already have a working key, but the transponder side always requires equipment.

So if you bought a key online, you are not throwing money away. The blank is usable. You just still need someone with the right tools to finish the job. Bring the key you bought and I can work with it on site rather than having you buy another one.
