I was parked near the community center in Downtown Fallbrook when the call came in. Guy told me he'd already paid a locksmith to cut and program a replacement key for his 2011 Hyundai Tucson. Key was cut right, turned in the ignition, cranked the engine fine. Then the car died after about two seconds, every single time.

If that step doesn't go through cleanly -- wrong tool, interrupted cycle, skipped confirmation -- the key writes to a temporary buffer but never commits to permanent memory. The car sees it just long enough to crank, then rejects it on the security check. Classic failed learn. The module gets the blame, but the module did exactly what it was supposed to do.
I connected through the OBD port, cleared the failed key data out of the system, and ran a clean registration with the full timed cycle. Watched the confirmation screen come back solid. Handed him the key, let him start it himself while I stood there. It fired and stayed running.
He asked me how the other guy missed it. I told him it's a procedure problem, not a parts problem, and those are the hardest ones to diagnose if you're not familiar with the specific cycle this system uses.
The dealer would have done the same thing I did, charged him a lot more for it, and required a tow because he had no working key at that point. He got it handled in his parking spot for a fraction of that.
