Out in Peutz Valley, around 1am on a weeknight, I got a call from a guy in Alpine who'd been locked out of his routine.
His 2019 Tucson was sitting in the driveway, fully functional in every mechanical sense, but the car had no idea it was supposed to let him in. His only fob had stopped being recognized. He'd already done the thing people do: new battery, tried it twice, same result. He was standing in his driveway Googling tow trucks when he found me instead.
I told him to stay put.
When I pulled up, he walked me through what happened. The fob had been getting flaky for a couple of days, shorter range than usual, touch unlock on the driver door going unreliable. Then that evening it just stopped. The car wouldn't unlock, the start button wouldn't respond, nothing.
I connected to the OBD port and pulled the PIN from the vehicle data. The 2019 Tucson uses a smart key system that requires diagnostic equipment to register fobs, so there's no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that gets you there. Once I had the PIN, I ran the all-keys-lost procedure, which wipes the immobilizer's memory and starts clean. His old fob, the factory 4-button unit, got re-enrolled as the primary key. I walked every function: door handles, start button, the lock button on the fob, the trunk release. All of it working.
He kept saying he assumed this was a next-morning tow-and-wait situation. The dealer comparison came up on its own; he'd been quoted for a key job on a different car a while back and remembered it being a half-day ordeal with a part on backorder. This was done in his driveway in under an hour.
Midnight in Alpine is not a problem for me.
