I got a call out to Cardiff-by-the-Sea on a Saturday afternoon. The owner had a 2013 Tucson and a situation that had already eaten most of her morning.
She had one working key. Her second fob had stopped being recognized, and she'd been putting off dealing with it for a few weeks. Then her primary fob started acting up too. By the time she called me, she was down to one unreliable key and a car she wasn't confident taking anywhere.
She'd already been on the phone with the dealer in the area. The quote she got assumed she'd need to tow the car in, and the number they gave her for two keys made her pause long enough to look for another option. That's when she found me.
I pulled up to her place off San Elijo and we talked through it for about two minutes. Both fobs were present, which meant this wasn't an all-keys-lost situation yet, but it was close. I connected to the diagnostic port, pulled the key data, and confirmed the second fob had dropped out of the system. The primary was still registered but had clearly been marginal for a while.
The job was to add a new key while the working fob was present, then sort out why the second had failed. Turned out the second fob's battery contact had a slight corrosion film on it, enough to make the fob look dead. Cleaned it, reseated a fresh CR2032, re-registered it. Both keys solid.
She asked me the OEM versus aftermarket question before I left. Honest answer: the aftermarket blank I used was quality-sourced, tested against real Tucson units before I ever stock it. The circuit does what it needs to do. The only thing missing was the logo on the back. She said she didn't need the logo. Neither do most people.
The dealer quote was still sitting in her recent calls when she paid me. She'd saved a good chunk, never left her driveway, and had two working keys before lunch.
