2020 Hyundai Tucson Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy from Bostonia called me on a Saturday morning. He was out near the desert edge east of El Cajon, camping with his family, when he realized both of his Tucson's fobs were gone. Not at home in a drawer. Gone. He'd already checked the camp chairs, the tent, the cooler. Nothing.
The problem with all-keys-lost on a push-to-start setup is that there's no ignition cylinder to fall back on. The car isn't going to turn over until a registered fob is talking to the system. It just sits there looking fine and going nowhere. He had his family with him and no tow truck was getting down that road without a serious wait and a serious bill.
I loaded up and drove out to him. On a 2020 Tucson, all-keys-lost means the old key data has to be cleared before anything new will register. That's not an OBD trick you can run from a code reader you bought online. I backed up the smart module data first, then ran the reset sequence and registered a new fob on site. The system accepted it clean on the first pass.
He pressed the start button, the engine turned over, and he just sat there for a second before he said anything. His family was packed up and moving inside of twenty minutes.
The dealer would have needed the car there in person, probably a flatbed from a dirt road, and a wait that stretched into next week. None of that happened. The whole job happened at a campsite.
