I got a call from a woman in the Fire Mountain neighborhood of Oceanside, over near the quieter side of the hill. She had a 2005 MINI Convertible and had been driving on one key for about a year. The second key had gone missing at some point, she figured during a move. No urgency, until the morning she reached into her bag and the one remaining key was gone too.
She had already called the dealer. The wait time they quoted her was not the same day. The price they quoted her was not a small number. She said she would think about it, and then she found me.
I drove out to her in Fire Mountain and took a look at the car. The MINI remote head key is a specific piece of equipment. The blade has to be cut to her car, and the transponder has to be enrolled to the immobilizer, and the remote has to be synced, and those are three separate things that have to happen in the right order. Not complicated if you know what you are doing, but not a generic key-cutting job either.
I cut the blade on site, ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to enroll it to the vehicle security system, verified it started cleanly, and tested the remote lock and unlock. Start to finish, done in her driveway.
She mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought on her way back inside. She had saved a good chunk, and she did not have to leave her neighborhood.
