I got a call from a guy up in Mt. Helix, the hillier stretch above the valley where half the driveways already have a view. He had a 2009 MINI Convertible, top down all weekend, and somewhere between Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon the remote just stopped responding. Car started fine. Locks ignored him completely.
He had already bought a CR2032 at the hardware store, swapped it in, and nothing changed. That's when he called me.
I pulled up and the first thing I did was open the key housing right there on the hood. The new battery he'd put in was sitting slightly off-center, one edge barely kissing the positive contact. His pry tool had bent the contact tab just enough that fresh voltage wasn't actually getting through clean. Straightened the tab, reseated the battery properly, and the remote came back before I even got to the programming equipment.
But I still tested every function. Lock, unlock, and the third button. I also checked remote range by walking back from the car and confirmed it was working at a normal distance, not just at arm's length. He was ready to write the whole thing off as a programming job or worse, an immobilizer issue.
The dealer had quoted him a wait and a fee just to diagnose it. He paid a fraction of that, and I was done in under twenty minutes.
