2017 MINI Convertible
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 MINI Convertible Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A Bonsall customer called me on a Thursday afternoon. She had one key left for her 2017 MINI Convertible, and it had stopped locking the doors from outside. The car would start fine, the fob still let her in, but the lock button on the fob was doing nothing. She figured the key was half-dead and she wanted a spare made before the whole thing went.

I drove out to Bonsall and met her in her driveway. First thing I did was pop the fob and pull the CR2032. It measured low, not dead, but low enough that the transmit functions were getting inconsistent while the start function, which draws less power, was hanging on. Swapped in a fresh battery, and the lock button came right back.

She still wanted a second key, which is the right call. One key on a modern MINI is just one bad day away from a tow. I connected to the OBD port, ran the pairing procedure through my diagnostic equipment, and registered a new fob alongside the original. Tested both keys on every function. Both started the car, both locked and unlocked, both showed a solid signal at normal range.

The whole job took about forty minutes at her place. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just for a parts order. She did not end up needing to go that route.
