I got a call from a guy parked near the shops on the west side of Escondido. He had his 2018 MINI Convertible, one working fob, and a story about a second key that went missing a few weeks earlier. He wasn't locked out. He just finally got around to replacing the spare and figured a dealer visit was the only option.

I connected to the OBD port and ran through the registration procedure on the body electronics module. The module has to authorize the new fob before it sees it as a valid key, not just any fob that fits. Once the new key was paired and confirmed, I tested it through every function: lock, unlock, start, the works. Then I handed it over and watched him test it himself. That part matters to me.
The whole thing was done in his parking spot. No tow, no waiting room, no dealer appointment three days out.
He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an afterthought when I was packing up. Said he wished he'd called sooner. I hear that a lot.
