2014 MINI Convertible
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I know if my key fob is the right one for the 2014 MINI Convertible?

The factory FCC ID is printed on the back label of your fob. That number is what tells us the correct blank to use, the right internal components, and the correct programming protocol for your vehicle. If you bought a replacement fob online and the FCC ID on it does not match what was originally on your key, it may not pair correctly no matter what tool is used.

Q: How much does a 2014 MINI Convertible key replacement cost?

Call us for an exact quote -- pricing depends on what you need, whether you have a working key or it's all-keys-lost, and what the job requires. What I can tell you is it's a fraction of what the dealer wanted when my customers ask me to compare. The quote you get on the phone is what you pay. No trip charge, no surprise fees after the job is done.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2014 MINI Convertible. Can you still make a key without one to start from?

Yes, all-keys-lost is a regular job for us. The process involves connecting to the OBD port with professional diagnostic equipment, running the all-keys-lost procedure through the immobilizer, and registering the new fob from scratch. The old keys get erased from the system at the same time -- they can't start the car after that. We also cut the emergency blade so you have a working mechanical backup inside the fob. Plan on about 30 to 45 minutes on site.

Q: The fob works fine outside the car but once I get in, the car shows a key-not-detected warning and won't start. What's going on?

This one comes up on these MINI fobs more than people expect. The car's antenna reads the fob at close range during the start sequence, and if that antenna has a weak signal or a wiring issue, it can drop the fob even when the remote functions work fine from a distance.

2014 MINI Convertible Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from Lakeside Proper on a Tuesday morning. Guy had a 2014 MINI Convertible sitting in his driveway, top down from the night before, and a fob that had completely stopped talking to the car. No lock, no unlock, and when he got in and tried to start it, the dash threw a key-not-detected warning and nothing happened.

He had already replaced the battery. Twice. Bought two different CR2032s from two different stores because he thought the first one might have been sitting on a shelf too long. Still nothing.

When I pulled up, I asked him how long the fob had been riding in his shorts pocket during top-down drives. He laughed a little. Said all summer.

I opened the fob on my tailgate. The CR2032 he installed was seated fine, but when I looked at the board, there was a small crack running near one of the solder points -- classic drop damage, the kind that hides until heat and vibration finish the job over a few months. The crack was just enough to break continuity under load.

We went straight to a new fob. I cut the emergency blade to match his lock, connected to the OBD port, ran the programming sequence, and paired the new fob to the immobilizer. Tested every button, tested the start, walked the door locks, and confirmed the blade worked in the door cylinder manually.

He was back on the road in about 40 minutes. The dealer had already quoted him a wait time measured in days and a price that made him wince. That was the afterthought. The main thing was he had his car back the same morning, right there in Lakeside Proper.

MINI Convertible Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2014 MINI Convertible key fob use?▼

CR2032. Standard size, easy to find at any auto parts store or pharmacy. When you swap it, make sure the contacts are clean and the battery seats flat -- the round fob design on these MINI keys has a specific orientation, and a slightly tilted battery can give you the same symptoms as a dead one. If you replace the battery and the fob still acts up, the issue is usually inside the fob itself, not the cell.
