A call came in from the Spring Valley Border side of Lemon Grove. The owner of a 2007 MINI Convertible had one working key left, and it was not working great. The remote portion had gotten flaky over the past few weeks. She could start the car fine, but locking and unlocking from a distance was hit or miss, and sometimes she had to be right up against the door for it to register.
She figured the blade was worn and the whole key was on its way out. That happens, and it is a reasonable guess.
I pulled up to the car, and the first thing I did was pop the fob and check the CR2032. It was the original battery. On a car this age, that is almost certainly the culprit for range issues. Fresh battery, reseated with clean contacts, and the remote came back fully. Range was back to normal across the parking area.
But she was still right to call. The key blade itself had visible wear at the tip from years of being forced into the ignition at a slight angle. A worn blade can eventually damage the ignition cylinder, so we talked through a second key as a backup. I cut one on site, programmed the transponder to the immobilizer through the OBD port, confirmed the engine started cleanly, and ran through all three button functions in front of her.
She had a working spare, the original key was back to full remote function, and she paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted her when she called them earlier that week.
